We take a look behind the scenes on our self storage depot complete with video action!

This page is intended for those that like to know more about what takes place behind the scenes on a typical self storage facility. Units need to be swapped around or changed and a shipping container facility requires the use of a HIAB to operate to maximum capacity providing a superb customer experience. A HIAB is simply a large lorry with a built in crane capable of lifting heavy loads such as shipping containers.
We’re going to see the HIAB in action and explain what is required to actually site shipping container units.

Below, we see a used shipping container which is no longer suitable for our requirements being lifted off site. Used container units, although obviously once new, have a shelf life – we strive to provide the very best in self storage and only reserve these particular units for builder use.

The HIAB is capable of lifting several tonne in weight. This particular shipping container is around two and a half tonne in weight, so it’s fairly easy for an experienced operator – as in this case!
Let’s take a look at typical HIAB lifting and we will finish off with actual on – site video footage.

Above: These are brand new units replacing the red units, soon to go! Notice how the hydraulics are able to easily haul these units around with ease.

Above: This HIAB has just finished replacing older units and has dropped off these lovely blue shipping container units which are suitable for storing furniture. The red units are long long. This is a historical snapshot.
Bear in mind that every single container unit on this facility has been positioned using a HIAB.

Above: The hydraulics on this particular DAF unit.

Above: We see the power and strength of the hydraulic lifting arm on this Scania unit. That’s quite some strength on show!
Nerd alert: Each of the four chains are capable of lifting around six tonne each in weight alone!
Below: We see container units being refreshed with paint – how it’s done!
OK, now a little more intense on site activity! The video, below, is a short twenty second clip compacted from a about half an hour – we show a small container locker being sited.
Below: Lifting a double stacked 20 foot ISO container unit in real time with sound. Lasting less than a minute in duration. This unit is what we call bottom lifted; that is, the chains are inserted into the bottom of the unit rather than top via twist locks.
Below: This short (just slightly over a minute) video, expands on the above video – it shows the HIAB in action again! It’s lifting a two and a half tonne unit (a 20 foot ISO unit) onto its bed. The footage is speeded up slightly. It takes around 25 minutes to complete the operation. Contains sound.
Below, we’ve a short less than two minute or so video of a half size 10 foot ISO unit being dropped onto site. These units are a lot lighter, at around one a a quarter tonne in weight, but still require the use of the HIAB to correctly level and site it in the exact position we require. Contains sound.
And we’ve more footage; isn’t the sound this thing makes just amazing!
Above: The hydraulic part of the HIAB moving. Look at the power of this! Contains audio; sound of the engine and arm in motion. A quick twenty second or so video.
Sometimes we are asked “what secures a shipping container to the Hiab bed during transport?” – Answer; The corner of the flatbed consists of a set of twist locks that also fit into slots on the corner of the shipping container. The container is fastened to the bed by pushing or twisting the twist locks. We can see these locks on the bed of the Hiab in the twenty second video below:
Keeping storage units clean
Of course, units need to be kept clean and fresh. All units are cared for which is a time consuming exercise. Internally, once a unit is vacated, we must ensure they are clean and fresh ready for the next storage occupier. This video below shows interior jet washing of our storage units with sanitiser.
Externally, sites need to be regularly kept fresh and clean as can be seen by the following on-site footage, below.
We hope you’ve enjoyed taking a small look behind the scenes at one of the storage depots in Carlisle, Cumbria. All what you’ve seen results in neat, professionally cared for facilities which result in excellent customer friendly sites.
And finally, a quick You Tube video below, where we see a small container being sited.
